While France has long been a republic, its royal past continues to fascinate musicians around the world. The French repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is considerable. Composed for a very small elite, this music has become popular today thanks to a perfectly-mastered and fairly simple musical vocabulary, based on immutable and therefore reassuring structures.
Recorded in 2017 at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York, this programme, conceived by flautist Barthold Kuijken, brings together works written for the transverse flute. The king of instruments at the Court of Versailles and synonymous with good taste and French refinement, the flute spread throughout Europe, in particular to the court of Frederick the Great in Potsdam where the king himself practiced this noble instrument.
A dozen French composers are summoned for this evocation of the century of Louis XIV with works which are either original or “mises en partition, dessus et passe” for the flute with basso continuo, here provided by Donald Livingston's harpsichord and Arnie Tanimoto's viola da gamba. From Clérambault to Marin Marais, via Lully, Lambert, Hotteterre or François Couperin, a whole world of ghosts suddenly comes alive with a melancholy which is faintly enlivened with a little frivolity. © François Hudry/Qobuz
