The Tallis Scholars were formed in 1973, so this 2023 release marks its 50th anniversary. Additionally, the album was the group's first after a pandemic pause, whereas it previously had often released multiple albums annually. These factors may have helped place this album on classical best-seller charts in the autumn of 2023, but they weren't the main thing. Most important is that The Tallis Scholars, after 50 years, still have a unique sound even as new choirs, great and small, have come along. The original group members were choristers at Oxford and Cambridge, but the Scholars do not have the ethereal collegiate-choir sound. With ten singers, they proceed along a knife's edge, precise and forceful. This works especially well with John Sheppard, although he is a bit earlier chronologically than Tallis and the other English and Continental composers of the High Renaissance that make up the bulk of the group's programming. The general trend with Sheppard has been to cultivate a monumental sound, but with ten singers in the smaller confines of the Brinkburn Priory rather than a cathedral, the details in Sheppard's contrapuntal writing emerge with pungent dissonances and vivid harmonic colors. There is a six-voice Missa Cantate plus five substantial motets, with much of the music showing a characteristic contrast of full texture with antiphonal pairs of groups. Sampling is difficult with the annoying breakdown of the music into no fewer than 80 tracks, but it is worth delving into the rich flow of polyphony at such junctures as the Incarnatus and Crucifixus of the mass. This performance offers an entirely distinctive way of approaching Sheppard and the rather thorny music of the early English Renaissance more generally, and it testifies amply to why The Tallis Scholars have lasted so long.
