"Jason, you're aMrazing": Eine Frau hält ihr großes Plakat in die Höhe. Der Angehimmelte lächelt. Scherzt mit dem Publikum. Animiert zum Tanzen. Sehr sympathisch wie der Mraz da so barfuss über die mit Teppichen ausgelegte Bühne tanzt und sich am Ende des Konzerts noch kurz die Flip-Flops überstreift. Nur live dabei sein, wäre noch schöner gewesen.
Seine DVD "Beautiful Mess – Live On Earth" beginnt atmosphärisch. Bilder des nächtlichen Chicagos werden immer wieder eingeblendet: im Wechsel zwischen Skyline und verschiedenen Bühnenperspektiven ein schönes Intro. Ein wenig stört zwar das nicht enden wollende Gekreische der meist weiblichen Fans - gehört zu einem Konzert aber eben dazu.
Bereits mit dem viel versprechenden Einstieg zeigt Schwiegermamas Liebling, dass ein Vollblutmusiker in ihm steckt. Nur von Gitarre begleitet erklingt seine weiche, sanfte Stimme bei "Sunshine Song". Viel jammiger angelegt als auf den Studioalben und deutlich mehr vom Reggae inspiriert kommen Songs wie das Gänsehautstück "The Remedy" live daher. Mraz bezieht seine Fans mit ein und lässt seine Vocals wiederholen. "Traveler/Make It Mine" oder "Copchase" warten dann mit langen Soli auf.
Stimmlich wirkt Mraz stets sehr sicher, meistert jede Anstrengung scheinbar mühelos und braucht keine aufgeblasene Bühnenshow: Häufig reicht schon sein Reggae-Kumpane, die Gitarre und ein schelmisches Lächeln. Sich selbst nimmt er dabei gerne mal auf die Schippe. "Another lovesong. Surprise, surprise, I got nothing but lovesongs", witzelt er. Den Überflieger "I'm Yours" performt der Musiker dann auch gewohnt liebenswürdig, mit Bläsereinsatz, zweistimmigem Gesang und vor allem textsicheren Fans.
Auch das Duett "Lucky" vom Album "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things." kommt zu Ehren: Popsternchen Colbie Caillat kommt auf die Bühne. Dem hübschen Duo sei Dank hört man über den ein oder andere schrägen Ton hinweg – was auf der CD nicht gelingt.
Insgesamt legt Mraz eine recht umfassendes und liebevoll gemachtes Paket vor. So enthält "Beautiful Mess" neben Aufnahmen und Erklärungen zu den Musikvideos eine Dokumentation namens "Un Beau Désordre" – ein schönes Chaos. Dort erlebt man einen Musiker, der absolut keine Starallüren pflegt, eine ziemliche Quatschnase abgibt und überall seine Finger im Spiel hat.
Zwar beschleicht einen zuweilen das Gefühl, dass hier mehr inszeniert als dokumentiert wurde. Dennoch kommen die Fans trotz der ein oder anderen Länge nah ran an ihren Star, der sich als äußerst liebenswerter Zeitgenosse offenbart.
