A gentle sunbeam falling on swimming trunks and umbrellas, this Cool School by Leo Sidran hits the spot. Having agreed to take on Michael Franks after Pierre Darmon from Bonsaï Music grabbed Speak To Me In Spanish (Mucho Leo), Ben Sidran's super-talented son lays his laid-back attitude a little further back. The work was recorded without any great urgency in Brooklyn, and then touched up in Paris. As he wanted, Sidran took care of everything, surrounding himself with musicians from all over, bringing on Leo Minax (Antonio's Song), Chrystel Waultier (You Were Mean To Me) but above all Michael Franks for some sweet duets. Nestled between bossa, jazz and slow groove, Sidran's voice honours the iconic 1970s singer who could flirt with both folk and jazz, with a classy intimacy that allows him to avoid falling into a sepia-toned nostalgia. Sidran is a dinosaur who "grew up listening to Mose and Chet" but also João Gilberto and Miles Davis. That is, he's every inch a child of the Cool School. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
