Wie bitte? 24 Präludien und Fugen unterzeichnet „Anthony Burgess“? Ist Burgess nicht der berühmte Schriftsteller, der 1962 Uhrwerk Orange geschrieben hat, nach dem Kubrick seinen gleichnamigen Film drehte? Doch, doch verehrte Leserinnen und Leser, es ist der gleiche Burgess. Denn bevor er seine glänzende Karriere als Schriftsteller und Essayist einschlug, hatte er als Komponist begonnen und schrieb sein Leben lang weiterhin Sinfonien, Opern, Kammermusik, Konzerte, Vokalmusik und auch Klavierstücke, wie dieses einzigartige Album zeigt. Die Präludien und Fugen stammen aus dem Jahr 1985 und tragen die ebenso humorvolle wie irreführende Bezeichnung The Bad-Tempered Electronic Keyboard (Das schlecht gelaunte elektronische Klavier) mit einem unübersetzbaren Wortspiel zwischen „well-tempered“, wohltemperiert, und „ill-tempered“, schlecht gelaunt oder von schlechtem Temperament. Das Wort „elektronisch“ bezieht sich darauf, dass Burgess bei dieser Komposition nur ein elektronisches Klavier zur Verfügung hatte. Auf der vorliegenden Aufnahme werden die Stücke natürlich auf einem richtigen Klavier vorgetragen. Burgess‘ Kompositionsstil entzieht sich jeder Kategorisierung: man findet natürlich Einflüsse von Bach (vor allem in den Fugen), aber auch von Schostakowitsch, Bartók, Prokofjew, und nicht zu vergessen asiatische Anklänge – Burgess arbeitete lange Zeit in Malaysia und Brunei – sowie einige Andeutungen auf Varieté, wobei man nie genau weiß, wo man sich gerade befindet. Aber genau das ist die Absicht des Komponisten, der seine Freude daran hat, ständig abzulenken, und der dennoch einen einwandfreien harmonischen und pianistischen Kompositionsstil beibehält.
