Busty and the Bass

A soul-jazz collective with Canadian-American roots, genre-blending Busty and the Bass pull together a diverse set of influences across their instrument-spanning lineup. Since forming at the Schulich School of Music in Montreal, the group have moved through the 2010s and 2020s with studio albums Uncommon Good, Eddie, and Forever Never Cares, landing collaborations with artists from George Clinton to Verdine White and touring extensively across North America and Europe. The group's ambitious and genre-fusing third set, Forever Never Cares, earned them a nomination for 'Breakthrough Group of the Year' at the 2024 JUNO Awards.Busty and the Bass' origins begin at Montréal's McGill University; the band's founding members met while studying at the institution's renowned Schulich School of Music, building a rapport and a wide-ranging sound through a series of informal jam sessions. Growing gradually over the course of a few years, the group’s original lineup settled with nine members: Nick Ferraro (vocals, alto sax), Scott Bevins (trumpet), Alistair Blu (vocals, keyboard, synthesizer), Julian Trivers (drums), Louis Stein (guitar), Milo Johnson (bass), Eric Haynes (piano, keyboard), Chris Vincent (trombone), and Mike McCann (trumpet). In late 2014, they found their signs of national success -- thet entered into the competition for Canada's Top University Band 2014, and were announced as the winners in October that year. Their success was followed with a debut EP, Bustified, an early career culmination of the group's first eight months together.With $10,000 of winnings behind them, the group set to work on recording a second EP: the bold GLAM was released in June 2015, after the group inked a deal with Indica Records. A third EP, 2016's LIFT, earned them a surprising endorsement from Macy Gray, after the group's cover of Gray's "I Try" found viral success online. With a smattering of smaller projects to their name, the group’s debut studio album, Uncommon Good, was short to follow. Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Neal Pogue (OutKast, Earth, Wind & Fire), the 2017 project demonstrated the group's layered melodies, affinity for genre bending, and collaborative creative process, establishing them as a key "one to watch" in the underground soul-jazz scene.Having parted ways with McCann, the group moved into the later stages of the decade with the Live from London EP before signing to new label Arts & Crafts in early 2020 for the roll-out of their sophomore album. After a string of teaser tracks, the band issued their second LP, Eddie, in September that year. With collaborators including George Clinton, Macy Gray, and Illa J, the project continued to flesh out the group's smooth genre fusions, alongside a conceptualized and focused theme of imparting lessons onto one's younger self. Alternate versions of album track "ET" surfaced with the 2021 EP ET Suite, before the Eddie (Instrumentals) were released later that year. A collaborative EP with rapper STS, Karneval, arrived in 2022. After the departure of Ferraro in 2022, the group set to work on their third studio LP, teased throughout 2022 and 2023 with five singles including “All the Things I Couldn’t Say to You.” Mixed and engineered by founding member Vincent, their expansive third effort arrived in November 2023, delivering an ambitious set of genre fusions based around the group’s signature soul-jazz sound. Following the project’s success, the band was nominated for Breakthrough Group of the Year at the 2024 JUNO Awards.
