Oulu Symphony Orchestra

The northernmost orchestra in Finland, the Oulu Symphony Orchestra has a substantial recording catalog of mostly Finnish works. The group has attracted major conductors and guest conductors from beyond Finland. The roots of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra (Finnish: Oulu Sinfonia) date back as far as 1856, when a group of musicians tried to establish a permanent orchestra in Oulu, far to the north on Finland's west coast. An Oulu Music Society was formed in 1901 and had some success, performing works by Jean Sibelius. In 1937, the Oulu Orchestra was established; it became the Oulu City Orchestra in 1954, and in 1961, the city of Oulu took over the Orchestra's management. The group moved into the Oulu Music Center in 1983 and continues to perform there in the Madetoja Concert Hall, named for Oulu native Leevi Madetoja. Beginning in 2000, the group recorded, already under the name Oulu Symphony Orchestra, three volumes of Madetoja's orchestral music. The name Oulu Symphony Orchestra was officially adopted in 2005. Since conductor Arvo Volmer ascended the podium in 1994 (remaining until 2005), the orchestra has been led by non-Finns, with the exception of Anna-Maria Helsing (2010-2013), the group's first female conductor. As of 2022, the orchestra's chief conductor is Rumon Gamba. Several prominent conductors, including John Storgårds, Susanna Mälkki, and Jaakko Kuusisto, have served as guest conductors of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra early in their careers. The Oulu Symphony has 61 full-time musicians. The group offers diverse programming that includes opera, jazz, film music, and folkloric music, as well as concerts for families. It often departs from the Oulu Music Center to give concerts at various locations in the city. The Oulu Symphony's recording catalog has been oriented heavily, but not exclusively, toward unfamiliar Finnish works; under conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, the group backed guitarist Timo Korhonen on a recording of concertos by Kimmo Hakola and Toshio Hosokawa. The orchestra has recorded mostly for the Alba and Ondine labels but moved to Chandos in 2023 for its first recording under Gamba, Overtures from Finland.
