Erick The Architect

Known most for his multiple roles with Brooklynite hip-hop outliers Flatbush Zombies, rapper/producer Erick the Architect, aka Erick Arc Elliott, has a solo catalog of even wider scope that dates back as far as his group's debut. In addition to creative sample-based productions -- inspired by beatmakers such as J Dilla, Madlib, and Alchemist -- Erick is also a clever MC with a flair for switching from animated and whimsical to deeply contemplative. Erick's own output ranges from Almost Remembered (2011), his debut mixtape, to I've Never Been Here Before (2024), his first album. The latter veered away from Erick's foundation in boom bap and neo-soul to traverse other sounds such as dancehall and psychedelic pop. Erick Elliott formed Flatbush Zombies with Meechy Darko and Zombie Juice in 2010. (They took their group name from the Brooklyn neighborhood from which they originate.) The year 2010 was also when Erick made his solo debut with Noir, a set of three tracks produced by Shinoshis. Concurrent with his emergence in Flatbush Zombies, Erick continued to issue solo projects. Almost Remembered and Renvoi, two mixtapes, were issued within three months of 2011. Flatbush Zombies' productivity and popularity peaked with the albums 3001: A Laced Odyssey and Vacation in Hell, respective number ten and number 11 hits on the Billboard 200. Between those triumphs, Erick delivered a couple beat tapes, Arcstrumentals, Vol. 1 and Arcstrumentals, Vol. 2, and among other one-off collaborations teamed with Pouya, Ghostemane, and Shakewell for "Death by Dishonor." Next for Erick came the Future Proof EP, a five-track effort released in 2021 that featured the soulful "Let It Go," on which he was joined by Loyle Carner and FARR. While remaining a go-to collaborator -- heard most often on Jungle's "Candle Flame" -- Erick put together his first solo album. The self-released I've Never Been Before landed in February 2024 with George Clinton, Lalah Hathaway, James Blake, and Joey Bada$$ among the many contributors.
