En 1990, Neil Young fait un come-back fracassant. Alors que le tsunami grunge s’apprête à dévaster la planète rock, l’ami des bisons est plus que jamais célébré par toute la scène indie anglo-saxonne. De Pearl Jam/Nirvana à Dinosaur Jr./Sonic Youth, tous en font une sorte de parrain du punk, Dieu tout-puissant du grunge. Le moment rêvé pour le Loner de réactiver sa formation la plus bruyante, Crazy Horse, et de sortir un magnifique disque de rock’n’roll bien sale et sans concession. Un album gorgé de guitares crues et de larsens qui trouent les tympans. Son titre : Ragged Glory. Enregistré le 13 novembre de cette même année au Catalyst de Santa Cruz, le live Way Down in the Rust Bucket (pour les experts, il s’agit du volume 11.5 des Performance Series des Neil Young Archives) documente la préparation de la tournée mondiale de Ragged Glory. Un impeccable concert californien pour se chauffer avec ce nouveau répertoire et revisiter quelques grands classiques de la maison (Cinnamon Girl, Don’t Cry No Tears, Sedan Delivery, Like a Hurricane ou bien encore Cortez the Killer dans une version cataclysmique de plus de 11 minutes !). Entouré du batteur Ralph Molina, du guitariste Frank Sampedro et du bassiste Billy Talbot, Neil Young, alors âgé de 45 ans, est au sommet de cet art brut qu’il incarne tant.
