Quelques semaines après Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Neil Young signe un pacte lucratif avec David Crosby, Stephen Stills et Graham Nash, concrétisé sur l’album Déjà Vu, un rêve hippie à quatre qui s’envole à la première place des charts et fait de leurs auteurs des stars mondiales ! Dans cette cadence infernale, il en profite pour publier au cœur de l’été 1970 son troisième disque solo – sans Crazy Horse cette fois – qui renferme certaines de ses plus belles chansons captées essentiellement dans sa maison de Topanga Canyon, en Californie. Entre désillusion et confusion, son écriture monte d’un cran, ses mélodies folk rock touchent au sublime (Only Love Can Break Your Heart) tout comme les harmonies vocales, plus exquises les unes que les autres (I Believe in You). Epoque oblige, l’utopie hippie reste sa préoccupation, tout comme l’engagement politique au cœur du fameux hymne anti-redneck Southern Man (auquel Lynyrd Skynyrd répondra avec Sweet Home Alabama). After the Goldrush est un album magique dans son parfait équilibre entre rock, folk et même country (le Loner revisite Oh, Lonesome Me de Don Gibson), un alliage dont Neil Young restera l’un des plus brillants artisans. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
