Sur The Understanding, la suite tant attendue du premier opus acclamé de Röyksopp, Melody A.M., le duo d'electronica norvégien peaufine sa musique atmosphérique. Sur de nombreux titres, Torbjørn Brundtland et Svein Berge se concentrent sur des structures pop plus accessibles. "Only This Moment" est un morceau dance déferlant, digne des Pet Shop Boys et "49 Percent" s'aventure sur un territoire R'n'B contemporain, tandis que "Follow My Ruin" est influencé par les années 80, truffé de basse funky, boîte à rythme et synthétiseurs. Ceux qui ont apprécié le côté enjoué de leur album précédent seront comblés, en particulier par le palpitant "Beautiful Day Without You" et le titre rythmé "Someone Like Me". The Understanding marque une rupture, sans être une volte-face totale, et révèle de nouvelles facettes de Röyksopp, sans abandonner l'esthétique rêveuse, riche en synthétiseurs qui caractérise le groupe.
