Rester et durer au sommet n’est pas à la portée de tous. Craig David, qui s’imposa comme une voix novatrice du R&B dès son premier album paru en 2000, Born to Do It, alors qu’il n’avait que 19 ans, en sait quelque chose…
Dix-huit ans plus tard, ayant traversé le meilleur comme le pire, le Britannique originaire de Southampton compte rappeler qu’il est encore créatif au possible. Pour son septième album, David trouve un certain équilibre entre sa patte personnelle et des sonorités plus contemporaines. Il slalome ainsi avec élégance entre le R&B pur, l’EDM et la pop sucrée. Et quand il se fait aider par un bidouilleur doué comme Kaytranada et un rappeur tout aussi ingénieux que GoldLink (Live in the Moment), il trouve un véritable second souffle sans pour autant sonner opportuniste.
A 36 ans, Craig David n’est peut-être plus une locomotive de la soul music, mais The Time Is Now reste tout de même l’œuvre d’un vrai pro du genre loin d’avoir dit son dernier mot… © CM/Qobuz
