Le chapitre punk du grand livre d’or de l’histoire du rock’n’roll aime opposer les Sex Pistols aux Clash. Et force est de constater que face au nihilisme anar’ de la bande de Johnny Rotten, celle de Joe Strummer préfère déclencher la révolte et la révolution. Guitares garage aux poings, mots choc en bouche et avalanche d’influences (garage, pub rock, rockabilly, reggae), les Clash, en dignes héritiers de l’esprit du MC5, font trembler l’establishment britannique avec des uppercuts comme I’m So Bored With The USA, White Riot, London’s Burning, I Fought The Law (reprise folle de Bobby Fuller), Hate & War ou Police & Thieves (un grand classique reggae de Junior Murvin). Tout au long de ce premier album plus que parfait, Strummer hurle comme un condamné à mort, Mick Jones maltraite les six cordes de sa Les Paul et Paul Simonon, la mèche pas encore gominée, entretient le feu dans la cheminée avec sa basse féline et bouillonnante comme s’il habitait Kingston. © MZ/Qobuz
