Disparu dans la stupeur du public au printemps 2022 à l’âge de 51 ans, le pianiste américain établi en France Nicholas Angelich a vite été reconnu comme un des très grands pianistes de notre époque. Modeste et réfléchi, il laisse une discographie réalisée en une vingtaine d’années pour Erato qui lui rend hommage avec cette collection réunissant l’équivalent de 7 CDs d’enregistrements inédits.

Réalisés entre 1999 et 2016 soit en concert, soit pour la radio, ils couvrent un très large éventail d’œuvres de Bach, Bartók, Beethoven Berg, Brahms, Franck, Haydn, Liszt, Moussorgski, Ravel, Rachmaninov et Zemlinsky. Aux côtés d'Angelich figurent Myung-Whun Chung et l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, ainsi que Tugan Sokhiev et l'Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.

On y trouve des merveilles telles les Etudes transcendantales de Liszt, les Variations sur un thème de Haendel de Brahms, les Variations Goldberg de Bach ou encore les Tableaux d’une exposition de Moussorgski. Côté musique de chambre signalons une version électrisante de la Sonate pour 2 pianos et percussion de Bartok avec Martha Argerich et un très passionné Quintette en fa mineur de César Franck avec le quatuor Ebène. Rachmaninov, qui convenait si bien au jeu puissant de Nicholas Angelich, est bien sûr au rendez-vous avec son Concerto N° 3 et ses célèbres Variations sur un thème de Paganini.
