Pianist Orli Shaham has gained a reputation as a Mozartian, partly through performances of the composer's piano-and-violin sonatas with her brother, Gil Shaham. With this 2020 release, she embarked on a complete cycle of Mozart's piano sonatas, with a program consisting of three works in B flat major. Shaham's Mozart playing is distinctive, combining brilliantly executed passagework with a flexible, expressive approach. She emphasizes the dramatic nature of Mozart's music, regarding some passages as akin to operatic scenes. This approach produces fresh readings of the outer movements of the K. 281 and K. 333 sonatas. It works less well in the Piano Sonata in B flat major, K. 576, a visionary late work that is almost minimalist in its sparseness. Shaham seems to chafe against the work's restricted language, but technically there's nothing to be said against Shaham's playing, and the same is true about Canary Classics' engineering work at the Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts. Those who especially like a traditional, somewhat Romantic approach to Mozart will eagerly anticipate the next volumes in Shaham's cycle.
