Vingt ans après leur album Cruelty Without Beauty, le célèbre duo britannique composé de Marc Almond et Dave Ball se reforme pour offrir à ses fans un opus certes toujours dansant, mais teinté (sans jeu de mots) de mystère, voire d’une certaine inquiétude – reflet d’une époque tourmentée ? La froideur torturée (Polaroid) rivalise avec une évanescence hors du temps (New Eden) dans cette collection de chansons où Almond déplore que les utopies du passé ne se soient pas réalisées. Il est donc question de Polaroid d’un autre âge, mais aussi de Nostalgia Machine dans ce Happiness Not Included qui assume – avec une touche d’humour camp – une tristesse et une désillusion souvent théâtralisées par Marc Almond. Dans New Eden, celui-ci chante avec une lucidité salutaire (qui est, pour le coup, d’une sincérité à prendre au premier degré) : « All those plans we made in the 60’s / Seem naïve now we’ve grown older » (« Tous ces plans qu’on a fait dans les années 1960/semblent naïfs maintenant que nous avons vieilli »). C’est donc un nouvel éden que les deux compères semblent rechercher entre les lignes de ces chansons dans lesquelles flottent une angoisse que notre duo colore d’humour, donc, mais surtout de beaucoup d’élégance (à l’image du magnifique I’m Not a Friend of God) ou de lyrisme glamour façon Pet Shop Boys (Purple Zone). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
