For the sake of consistency, most Mahler box sets are focused on the recordings of one conductor and orchestra, and usually include only the nine completed symphonies. This 21-CD box from Profil runs counter to expectations, in that a variety of conductors and orchestras is included, and the symphonies are presented with Das Lied von der Erde; the song cycles Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, and Kindertotenlieder; the early cantata Das klagende Lied; and selected songs from Lieder und Gesänge aus der Jugenzeit and Rückert-Lieder. Furthermore, this set also includes the Adagio from the unfinished Symphony No. 10, the rejected "Blumine" movement from the original tone poem version of the Symphony No. 1, and Mahler's completion of Carl Maria von Weber's opera, Die drei Pintos. The roster of conductors reads like a who's who in the history of Mahler performances, including Bruno Walter, Bernard Haitink, Jascha Horenstein, Klaus Tennstedt, Dmitri Mitropoulos, Hans Rosbaud, Leopold Stokowski, Giuseppe Sinopoli, and Georg Solti, among others. While this is a treasure trove for Mahler specialists, newcomers should know that most of these recordings fall into the historical category and don't offer the best audio quality and clarity of performance, which are crucial to appreciating these long and complex works.
