Er war derjenige, der hauptsächlich für die Verwandlung von R&B in Soul verantwortlich war und er war – die meisten werden zustimmen – diejenige Person, die in den späten 1960er und 1970er Jahren hauptsächlich für die Umwandlung des Soul in die Funk-Musik verantwortlich zeichnete. Darüber hinaus dienten seine Stimme und seine Rhythmen als Vorlage für unzählige Hip-Hop-Alben. Und kein anderer Musiker aus dem Pop-Bereich oder einem anderen Genre bot eine aufregendere und beschwingtere Bühnenshow: Browns Darbietungen kamen einem Wunder an athletischem Durchhaltevermögen gleich und zeigten das Gefühl für den richtigen Moment.
