Pete Murray
Known for his thoughtful, low-key folk-pop, singer/songwriter Pete Murray emerged from relative obscurity in the middle part of the 2000s to become one of Australia's biggest stars. Beginning with his breakout 2003 sophomore album, Feeler, Murray sent three consecutive albums to number one and remained a popular concert draw and consistent chart fixture throughout the next decade as well. Entering his third decade of work, he made an intentional shift toward smaller and more prolific releases starting with the 2020 single "Found My Place."
Born and raised in Queensland, Murray was a star athlete at Nudgee College, and in 1993 was named to the Queensland seven-a-side rugby team before injuries derailed his career. While sidelined, Murray began learning guitar but harbored few aspirations of music stardom, instead studying sports medicine. Friends encouraged him to begin singing professionally, however, and after several years of club gigs, he issued his debut LP, The Game, in 2002.
After signing to Sony BMG, Murray released his first major-label effort, Feeler, in mid-2003. Thanks to steady airplay on Australian alternative radio outlet Triple J, the album entered the Aussie charts, and with the release of the third single, "So Beautiful," the singer's career exploded. Feeler reached number one in March 2004, going platinum six times over. Following a major tour of Australia, Murray proved his staying power with 2005's See the Sun, which also peaked at number one and performed nearly as well as his previous outing, reaching 4x platinum status. 2008's Summer at Eureka gave him his third consecutive chart-topper and by the decade's end, Murray had firstly established himself as one of the country's best-selling artists.
Recorded in the wake of a divorce, 2011's highly regarded Blue Sky Blue proved to be a surprisingly buoyant affair and was later reworked into a series of stripped-down acoustic versions and duets on the 2015 release Blue Sky Blue "The Byron Sessions." Showing he hadn't lost any of his commercial appeal, Murray raced back to a number three position on his seventh album, 2017's Comacho, a slickly produced set that flirted with electronic loops and synths. Changing his approach in 2020, he revealed his intention to release a series of more-frequent, smaller releases including numerous singles and EPs. The first to arrive was "Found My Place."
