Lorelei Ensemble
Lorelei Ensemble proclaims a dual mission: "to advance and elevate women’s voices, and to enrich the repertoire through forward-thinking and co-creative collaboration." The group specializes in contemporary music, often premiering new works, and also regularly performing Renaissance and medieval music.
Lorelei Ensemble was founded in Boston in 2007 by Beth Willer, a conductor who studied at Boston University and went on to join the faculty at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, commuting to Boston for the ensemble's rehearsals. Willer's motivation was partly personal: she had sung in all-female choirs since her school days and often felt they had second-class status, so she set out to build a virtuoso choir of nine women who would explore the repertory for women's voices. Lorelei Ensemble has given more than 60 works their world, U.S., or regional premieres, collaborating with such composers as Lisa Bielawa, Christopher Cerrone, and Julia Wolfe. The group also mixes contemporary music with early music in creative programs. Lorelei Ensemble has performed at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Trinity Wall Street church, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The group collaborates with other ensembles, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, A Far Cry, and Cantus. Residencies working with young singers at such schools as Harvard, Yale, and Duke are a major part of the choir's schedule. Programs for the 2020-2021 season were projected to include the world premiere of Wolfe's Her Story.
Lorelei Ensemble issued the album Live. Know. Love. on its own label. The group moved to Sono Luminus for 2018's Impermanence. That album exemplified the diversity of the group's programs, mixing the premiere recording of Peter Gilbert’s Tsukimi, "Vocalise I" of Toru Takemitsu, motets of Guillaume Dufay, and selections from the Turin Manuscript and the Codex Calixtinus. The choir moved again to Cantaloupe for the 2020 release David Lang: Love Fail.
