Fiona Joy Hawkins
A classically trained composer, pianist, and singer, Australia's Fiona Joy Hawkins is best known for contemporary instrumental piano works that balance grace and passion. Incorporating influences from other genres, including the Celtic music of her heritage, her albums have spanned her orchestrated, nature-themed debut, Portrait of a Waterfall (2005); the ARIA Award-nominated, Will Ackerman-produced Blue Dream (2008), which contained occasional vocals; the Celtic-influenced 600 Years in a Moment (2013), and the solo piano outing Into the Mist (2017). She is also known as a member of the new age supergroup FLOW. In 2023, she released To the Wind…, a third collaboration with violinist Rebecca Daniel that also featured vocals by both musicians.
Born in Cessnock, New South Wales, Hawkins took piano lessons from a young age and by her teens was composing her own music. After high school, she honed her skills while studying classical piano at Tamworth Conservatorium of Music. Influenced by the lyrical, atmospheric work of artists like George Winston and Michael Nyman as well as the classical compositions of Frédéric Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn, Hawkins debuted in 2005 with Portrait of a Waterfall, which fleshed out her romantic piano melodies with strings. The first in a series of releases for Little Hartley Music, it topped new age radio charts. She followed up with several more well-received albums, including 2006's Angel Above My Piano and the next year's Ice: Piano Slightly Chilled, which found her accompanied by synths and programmed beats. Her 2008 album, Blue Dream, was a collaborative effort produced by Will Ackerman whose guests included Irish singer/songwriter Luka Bloom, Ugandan flutist Samite Mulondo, and pianist Philip Aaberg. Blue Dream was nominated for ARIA Music Award in the category of Best World Music Album, and it won Zone Music Reporter Awards for Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, and Best Instrumental Album. A holiday album, Christmas Joy, followed in late 2011 before early 2012's Live at the Q captured a performance of Blue Dream with her Blue Dream Ensemble.
Arriving later in 2012, Sensual Journeys was another lightly orchestrated release, and she returned to Celtic themes on mid-2013's 600 Years in a Moment, which featured guitar and production contributions from Ackerman. The solo piano album Signature: Solo saw release in early 2015, with the orchestrated Signature: Synchronicity (2016) and collaborative Signature: Deluxe Edition (2019) reworking its tracks. In the meantime, Hawkins also delivered a pair of solo piano LPs for the Blue Coast Music label -- 2017's Into the Mist and 2018's Story of Ghosts -- and she formed FLOW, a quartet with Will Ackerman, guitarist Lawrence Blatt, and flügelhorn player Jeff Oster. They released their eponymous debut album in 2017, with a follow-up, Promise, arriving on LMB Music in 2019. As part of touring in support of the project, FLOW performed at Carnegie Hall in September 2019.
Hawkins returned to the Little Hartley Music label with The Lightness of Dark, a duo album with violinist/vocalist Rebecca Daniel featuring the Kanimbla Quartet. Produced by Ackerman and Tom Eaton, the Hawkins album Moving Through Worlds appeared on Blue Coast in July 2020. The Lightness of Dark REIMAGINED followed in March 2021, the same month Heavenly Voices, another collaboration with Rebecca Daniel, was issued. Amidst tours of Australia and abroad, the duo returned on Blue Coast in April 2023 with To the Wind… That September, Hawkins released a solo piano edition of Blue Dream (blue dream - Solo Piano).
