Ne Leute, lustig ist das nicht, aber für euch noch einmal: kauft euch doch endlich ein paar Platten dieser Band, damit man als blöder Schreiberling nicht dauernd wiederholen muss, dass King's X es verdient hätten ... ach lassen wir's.
Allerorten tönt es "Retro" und auch das Ami-Trio schließt sich der allgemeinen musikalischen Rückwärtsgewandtheit an. Nur bedienen sie sich nicht bei anderen, sondern schielen auf ihre eigenen Großtaten aus den späten Achtzigern und Neunzigern. Weniger verspielt fahren King's X einen satten Sound auf, der knackig auf den Punkt kommt. Michael Wagener saß diesmal wieder hinter den Knöpfchen. Statt sich aber darauf zu versteifen, glatten, fischigen Hardrock zu produzieren, wie er es in seiner Vergangenheit des öfteren getan hat, veredelt er den King's X-Sound einfach nur, so können Songs wie der treibende Opener "Alone" schön trocken und knallend rüberkommen.
Der ihnen eigene Pop-Appeal ist auch 2005 noch ein hervorstechendes Merkmal. Da macht auch "Ogre Tones" keine Ausnahme. Nur bratzt alles wieder ein wenig mehr, was sicher auch mit der kurzen Spielzeit zusammen hängen dürfte. Meist kommen Pinnick und Co. relativ schnell auf den Punkt und vermeiden ausufernde instrumentale Weitschweifigkeiten. Lediglich das schleppend-sanfte "Sooner Or Later" stellt mit sieben Minuten Spielzeit einen Ausreißer nach oben dar. Hier darf sich Ty Tabor wieder mal richtig einen von der Nudel gniedeln. Ab dem Mittelteil macht sich sogleich eine lockere Jam Session-Atmosphäre breit, ohne jedoch zu langweilen - Sportzigarette basteln und ab zu den Sternen!
"Bebop" überrascht dann tatsächlich mit dem im Waschzettel angekündigten Schluss. Doug Pinnick gebiert sich als Zwitter aus Rock-Shouter (inklusive A whop bop-a-lu la whop bam boom) und Jazz-Crooner. Dazwischen geworfene Breaks lockern die Sache auf, aber gegen Ende knödeln sich die drei instrumental derbe einen aus dem Allerwertesten. Etwas aus dem Rahmen fällt lediglich das ... nun ja, bescheuerte "Bam". Nach Distort-Gitarren faselt eine Mickeymaus-Stimme etwas von "entertain you". Grenzwertig das. Aber ansonsten haben King's X ein Album abgeliefert, das mit zu den stärksten ihrer Karriere gehört.
