Few retro soul performers can whip up the atmosphere and get all the details right like Andy Platts' Mamas Gun. With his huge voice and deep musical knowledge, Platts' favorite era is decidedly sweet and funky '70s soul. Think Bill Withers, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield's falsetto, even Motown—any funky soul from the '70s—and you'll immediately understand Mamas Gun's bag and mission. Named after Erykah Badu's 2000 album, Mamas Gun's fifth album, recorded on tape with vintage gear during the pandemic in Platts' home studio, Cure the Jones opens with "When You Stole the Sun From the Sky," a brokenhearted soul power ballad where violins add fluff as Platts puts on a vocal tour de force via overdubs, singing downbeat lyrics over a sunny melody: "Though I know love never lasts/ I just can't imagine/ Above as heaven blackens/ I'll ever see the light." The sound here is analog rich—round and warm in the extreme. Platts flips into another classic '70s rhythm for "Good Love" with guitarist Terry Lewis driving the melody along. With keyboardist Dave Oliver on Wurlitzer and Hammond B-3 and Platts on Korg MS-20, "Looking for Moses" sounds uncannily like an uncut Withers track. "Friends to Lovers," Platts' contribution to the "crossing the bridge from friends to lovers" song category is a smooth tune you swore you'd heard from Grover Washington, Jr.  This kind of déjà vu haunts this entire album in a good way. "Party for One" opens with horns that are straight out of the early '80s Jay Graydon playbook; "You're Too Hip (For Me Baby)" goes even further back, with Platts—again with an impressive layering of overdubs of his own voice—reanimating the moments when slow doo-wop transitioned to the soul ballad. (As another nod towards the past, this track also uses a vintage Bentley Rhythm Ace drum machine.) Front loaded with the best tracks, Cure the Jones winds down near the end, closing with the bittersweet ballad "Daffodils" where, "We can sow/ Love to flower again/ It's all that we've got." Ambitiously genuine and genuinely heartfelt, Cure the Jones does just that, pushing beyond mere facsimile into '70s soul for a new century. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
