Ce troisième album studio de Travis Scott était vraiment attendu comme celui de la consécration. Après une mainmise totale sur le marché du rap et des tubes planétaires comme Pick Up the Phone, Goosebumps ou Antidote, le rappeur originaire de Houston avait une ambition particulière pour cet ASTROWORLD maintes fois repoussé. Manifeste choral, le résultat est à la hauteur du phénomène. L’album est une suite logique de collages intempestifs et lancinants. Travis s’y pose presque plus comme un curateur ou un directeur artistique plutôt qu’un artiste total. Il mélange facilement les échantillons pour obtenir sa propre formule, un mastodonte sonore impossible à terrasser. Les invités non annoncés sont traités comme des samples dans cet énorme cocktail explosif alors qu’il s’agit pourtant du gratin, de Drake à 21Savage en passant par The Weeknd, Frank Ocean et Stevie Wonder.
Ce nivellement total des sources et hommages rend ASTROWORLD complètement polymorphe, à la fois complètement blockbuster mainstream et pièce arty moderne. Pourtant âgé de quelques mois, son succès BUTTERFLY EFFECT se fond complètement dans le modèle comme si l’album absorbait toutes les énergies pour en recracher une seule et même couleur. D’autres morceaux à la structure parfois complexes sonnent pourtant comme des futurs hits en puissance comme SICKO MOB ou NOBYSTANDERS. A la croisée de chemins parfois divergents, Travis Scott créé un équilibre unique pouvant satisfaire le grand public mais aussi les mélomanes adeptes de références obscures. Passant allègrement de DJ Screw aux Kardashians, ASTROWORLD est la bande-son de notre époque, un dédale musicalement impeccable, parfois un peu vain mais où l’on se perd avec délectation. Pourtant, l’identité de Travis reste encore à dévoiler dans cette multitude de codes et emprunts.
