Silver Moth

A U.K. collective featuring Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite and singer/songwriter Elizabeth Elektra, Silver Moth's version of post-rock is as heartfelt as it is ambitious. The seven-piece seized the opportunity to record in the Outer Hebrides during downtime from the COVID-19 global pandemic, with 2023's album Black Bay drawing from the timeless beauty of nature, the spontaneity of new friendships, as well as poems, mythology, and everyday life. Silver Moth began when Elektra connected with Abrasive Trees guitarist/songwriter Matthew Rochford on social media during lockdowns for the COVID-19 global pandemic (even attending some of his online tai chi sessions). When they discussed making music together, their plans grew to include Braithwaite, Rochford's bandmate Steven Hill, Burning House drummer Ash Babb, Prosthetic Head cellist Ben Roberts, singer/songwriter Evi Vine, and composer/multi-instrumentalist Nick Hudson. After a few online rehearsals, in early 2021 Silver Moth's members -- of whom only Elektra and Braithwaite had met in person previously -- headed to Black Bay, a studio located on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides archipelago. Working with producer Pete Fletcher and engineer Callum, the band wrote and recorded their debut album in four days. Appearing in April 2023, Black Bay wove departed friends, the poetry of Rochford's late father, and Inuit mythology into its dramatic, layered compositions.
