The WAEVE

As the Waeve, Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall blend folk, post-punk, and experimental rock into mercurial songs unlike any of their previous work. The exploratory forays into these sounds on 2023's The Waeve reflected the duo's beginnings during COVID-19 global pandemic lockdowns but also drew from larger British musical traditions. Dougall and Coxon first met in 2004 at a show performed by her group the Pipettes. By the time they truly connected in 2020, Dougall had established herself as a singer/songwriter with three albums to her name (including 2019's A New Illusion), while Coxon had sporadically worked with Blur while pursuing a solo career that included solo albums as well as music for the TV show The End of the F***ing World and the comic book Superstate. After they both played a socially distanced concert raising money for Lebanon following the explosion in the Port of Beirut, they began exchanging musical ideas late in 2020. When they started recording, Coxon and Dougall challenged themselves to go beyond their comfort zones. For musical inspiration, they tapped into the moody storytelling traditions of English folk luminaries such as Sandy Denny or John and Beverley Martyn and the experiments of Kevin Ayers and Van der Graaf Generator. Meanwhile, their instruments ranged from an ARP 2000 modular synth to a medieval folk lute to the saxophone, which Coxon first played in his pre-Blur band with Damon Albarn, Seymour. The duo finished what would become the Waeve's self-titled debut album with drums and extra production touches courtesy of James Ford and string parts by the Elysian Quartet. The Waeve played its first show and released its debut single, "Something Pretty," in May 2022. Ranging from lush orchestral pop to spiky electro rock, The Waeve appeared in February 2023.
