Corridor

Montreal band Corridor blends spiky, interlocking guitars and electronic textures with pop hooks and vocals sung entirely in French. In the mid-2010s, the band honed their post-punk sound for various French and North American labels before signing with Sub Pop for 2019's energetic Junior, their third album. Corridor then took a more measured approach, leaning into their experimental pop instincts on 2024's more sonically refined Mimi. Formed in the early 2010s by guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Robert and bassist Dominic Berthiaume, Corridor released their debut EP in 2013. The six-song Un Magicien en Toi also featured guitarist Julian Perreault and drummer Marc-André Chapdelaine and was issued by the L'Oeil du Tigre label. The same lineup recorded 2015's Le Voyage Éternel, their more streamlined debut album. It was produced by Emmanuel Ethier, who also contributed synths. In May 2016, Corridor issued a stand-alone single "Le Viol de Sharone," a post-punk reimagining of the Knack's "My Sharona," that marked their first recording with drummer Julien Bakvis. Working again with Ethier, the group began sessions for their follow-up album. The twitchy, tunefully anxious Supermercado was released in 2017 by French label Requiem Pour un Twister and Citrus City Records in the U.S. Another one-off single, "Deux Coeurs," appeared at the end of the year with guest vocalist Halo Maud singing. Corridor set off on a 2018 world tour, playing shows in Europe, hitting SXSW, and crisscrossing America opening for Shame. Early the following year, Robert released his own debut album as Jonathan Personne on Requiem Pour un Twister titled Histoire Naturelle, which gathered up psychedelic power pop recordings he made at home. Meanwhile, Corridor had signed with Sub Pop and they went into the studio with Ethier to begin work on their third album. Recording quickly, they expanded their sound to include samples and looser arrangements. The album Junior was released in October 2019 on both Sub Pop and the Canadian label Bonsound. At the start of the next decade, Corridor evolved both their sound and approach. With touring interrupted by the 2020 global pandemic, the trio began working more slowly, deliberately moving away from the guitar-centric style of their earlier albums. They brought touring multi-instrumentalist Samuel Gougoux into the band as a full-time member, and with the help of producer Joojoo Ashworth (Dummy, Automatic) honed a more eccentric pop style that incorporated more synths and electronic elements as well as acoustic ones. Their refined fourth album, Mimi, was released by Sub Pop in April 2024.
