Vox Chamber Choir

The vOx Chamber Choir bills itself as "Oxford's premier chamber choir, singing challenging, mostly a cappella works from the Renaissance through to contemporary." Although young, the group has toured widely in Britain and made several unusual recordings. The vOx Chamber Choir was founded in 2013 by conductor David Crown, a peripatetic choral director who also leads several other contemporary British groups. It is not to be confused with the Vox Chamber Choir of Pretoria, South Africa, or Germany's Vox Bona Chamber Choir. The group maintains a maximum of 24 members, drawn from across Oxfordshire, other Midland counties, and across South East England. vOx has performed discrete works, including Bach's Mass in B minor, BWV 232, Handel's Messiah, HWV 56, and the requiem masses of Victoria, Fauré, and Herbert Howells, but right from the start, the group has programmed varied evenings of music addressing a single theme but distributed over several centuries. The debut vOx concert in April of 2014 paired the Victoria Requiem with the Miserere of Henryk Górecki. The summer season of 2014 brought vOx concerts featuring the music of Bach, Bruckner, Arvo Pärt, Gabriel Jackson, and Ola Gjeilo. The group has performed unusual repertory, including that of early Baroque composer Lodovico da Viadana, which it paired in a 2016 program with the Stabat Mater of Pergolesi. As vOx's name became more widely known, the choir began to tour the Oxfordshire region and then to London and other cathedral cities. In 2018, vOx toured Ireland, leading up to a concert at the Cistercian Abbey, Mount Melleray, in County Waterford. The group's collaborators have included violinist and composer Paul Giger, the Cheltenham Bach Choir, and the Musical and Amicable Society, a Baroque orchestra. The vOx Chamber Choir records for Naxos. The Viadana program grew into the first vOx album, Lodovico da Viadana: Choral Works, released on the Naxos label in 2017. The choir followed that up with an album devoted to the music of contemporary composer Alexander Campkin, issued in 2021.
