Taylor Janzen

The restless, introspective songs of Canada's Taylor Janzen recall the vulnerability of contemporaries like Phoebe Bridgers, Daughter, and Julien Baker. She made her label debut in 2018 with the solo EP Interpersonal before fleshing out her sound with a backing band for the next year's Shouting Matches. Her fully produced debut album, I Live in Patterns, saw release in 2023. Born and raised in Saint Boniface, Winnipeg, Janzen began writing songs on an acoustic guitar about struggles with religion, relationships, and mental health while in high school. Her first set of tracks, the acoustic EP Fear & Faith, appeared online in 2017. 2MM Records took notice and issued the follow-up, 2018's Interpersonal, which again consisted of solo Janzen with her guitar. This time, she enlisted the help of mastering engineer Greg Calbi (Big Thief, Julien Baker) and received more widespread attention in the music blogosphere. Leaving the D.I.Y. approach of her beginnings behind, Janzen's third EP, Shouting Matches, was recorded with a backing band and producer Mike Mogis (First Aid Kit, Justin Townes Earle, Cursive) in a studio in Omaha, Nebraska. It arrived on 2MM in mid-2019, and Janzen was signed to elite indie label Glassnote before the end of the year. "What I Do…" followed on Glassnote that December. Further stand-alone singles, including 2020's "I Feel a Darkness" and "Devotion," as well as covers of Halsey and Phoenix, appeared before Janzen began to release material from her debut album. Featuring further-streamlined production, a collaboration with singer/songwriter Alix Page, and a tear-stained album cover, I Live in Patterns arrived on Glassnote and Arts & Crafts in March of 2023.
