Permit

Bloomfield, Indiana native Drew Auscherman of the band Hoops had already been in one lo-fi guitar pop band, Daguerreotype, with Jack Andrew when the duo decided to form Permit in 2016. Taking a step away from the chiming indie pop they made with Daguerreotype, the pair delved deep into their classic rock knowledge (especially Thin Lizzy and their dual-guitar attack), mixed it with some tape hiss, and sped it up until the RPMs reached dangerously high levels to come up with Permit's sound. Since Hoops were already signed to Fat Possum, the duo had an entry there, and the label released Permit's first single, Vol. 1, in December of 2016. The six songs on the single were fuzzy, amped-up lo-fi rock and the guys eschewed the usual practice of giving their creations titles; instead, they were listed as "Track #1," "Track #2," and so on.
