Neil Thomson

Britain's Neil Thomson is the principal conductor and music director of the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra in Brazil. He has conducted widely in his home country, and he has the unusual specialty of leading orchestras in live performances of film scores, accompanying the films for which they were written. Thomson was born on May 23, 1966, in London. He attended secondary school at Dulwich College and then enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, studying violin and viola from 1984 to 1987. From 1987 to 1989, he studied conducting at the Royal College of Music with Norman Del Mar, and in the summer of 1989, he attended the summer conducting course at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts, taking classes with Gustav Meier, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Sanderling, and Leonard Bernstein. He has appeared as a guest conductor with a wide variety of English orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted orchestras in Finland, Romania, Ireland, and a large group of Japanese ensembles, including the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, and the Kansai Philharmonic. In March of 2014, Thomson became the principal conductor and music director of the Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra in Brazil. In that country, he has made guest appearances with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, and Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, touring with Brazilian cellist Antônio Meneses. The large group of international-caliber soloists with whom he has toured also includes violinist Sarah Chang, flutist James Galway, and percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Thomson also specializes in conducting orchestras playing film scores as accompaniment to the films for which the scores were composed. He premiered a reconstructed score for Singin' in the Rain at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 2013 and has also conducted scores for The Wizard of Oz, Titanic, Amadeus, and several Alfred Hitchcock films. He also participated in the premiere of the film Gene Kelly: A Life in Music, a project devised by Kelly's widow and aimed at preserving his artistic contributions. Thomson has taught at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Krakow Academy of Music in Poland, the Los Angeles Conducting Workshop, and several other institutions. He has made several recordings, including an album of contemporary American violin concertos with Ittai Shapira and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and two of music by César Guerra-Peixe with the Goiás Philharmonic. With that group, he embarked on a cycle for the Naxos label of the 14 symphonies of Claudio Santoro in 2022.
