Marie-josée Neuville

Nicknamed the "Collegienne de la chanson", singer Marie-Josée Neuville, whose real name is Josée Françoise Deneuville, was born in Paris on January 10, 1938. From the age of twelve, she accompanied herself on stage on guitar at the Salon de l'enfance, and made a name for herself in 1955, when she won first prize in the Kermesse aux étoiles, an amateur singing competition held in Paris, with the song "Johnny Boy". The song became an instant hit when it was released on the Pathé label, and earned Marie-Josée Neuville a nickname printed on all her record sleeves, that of "Collégienne de la chanson", recognizable by her pigtails, adding to the advertising argument. In March 1956, Neuville's first appearance at the Olympia in Paris provoked controversy in the press because of the lyrics of her new song, "Le Monsieur du métro", which was acclaimed by the public as her biggest hit, and was placed on the opening track of her second album, alongside "Par derrière ou par devant". Admired by the younger generation, the singer returned to the Olympia stage three times, in October 1956, opening for Charles Aznavour in March 1957 and The Platters in 1958, despite the censorship that also hit the song "Nativité". In 1957, her record company released the album of a concert at the Olympia, Les Dernières Chansons de Marie-Josée Neuville, and the compilation Sur Deux Nattes. Although she changed her appearance, Marie-Josée Neuville was unable to recapture the audience of her early days. In 1962, after recording the title track "Tout recommence" and the EP Le Voltigeur, she married mountaineer and filmmaker Gérard Herzog, then starred in the radio drama Cécilia, médecin de campagne (1963), which included a duet with Ricet Barrier on "La Leçon de charme". She followed this up with a career in film and television, first as an actress and then as a presenter, as well as on the radio, hosting programs on Europe 1, France Inter and RTL. In 1998, she released the album Couleur Sépia, featuring songs that had remained unreleased since their recording in 1980, as well as the double CD compilation Marie Josée Neuville (RYM Musique). In 2010, La Collégienne de la Chanson (Marianne Mélodie) brings together all the songs recorded between 1956 and 1962.
