Judith Owen

Vocalist and songwriter Judith Owen's eclecticism has seen her records alternately labeled as singer/songwriter folk, adult alternative pop/rock, cabaret, and jazz. After making her debut with Emotions on a Postcard in 1996, highlights of her subsequent releases have included teaming up with Richard Thompson and Julia Fordham for a pair of duets on 2003's 12 Arrows, evoking the greats of the '70s singer/songwriter era on albums like 2006's Here and 2014's Ebb & Flow, and turning to bluesier vocal influences from Pearl Bailey to Peggy Lee for 2023's feisty jazz outing Come On & Get It. Born in London into a musical Welsh family, Owen was surrounded by classical music, theater, and the arts as a child, and her parents' record collection included many of the jazz greats and Broadway musicals that would help define her vocal style. She began writing songs as a teenager and was embarking on a career as a professional musician when she met actor/writer/musician Harry Shearer. They married in 1993, and she contributed vocals and keyboards to his 1994 album, It Must Have Been Something I Said. Her first solo album, Emotions on a Postcard, arrived on her own Dog on the Bed label in 1996. An album originally recorded for producer/composer Glen Ballard's Java Records (until restructuring at parent company Capitol), the adult alternative-styled Limited Edition followed in 2000 and included a song co-written by Ballard. That song, "Creatures of Habit," and "Get Into It" from the album were featured in the film Olive Juice. Her final album on Dog on the Bed, 2003's introspective, singer/songwriter-minded 12 Arrows, included a cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" as well as duets with Julia Fordham ("That Scares Me") and Richard Thompson ("Poseidon"). Meanwhile, Owen appeared on the Thompson albums Mock Tudor, 1000 Years of Popular Music, and Old Kit Bag. She toured in support of k.d. lang and put out the Christmas in July EP in 2005 before moving to Courgette, a label established that year by Owen and Shearer, for a string of records beginning with 2006's Here. Bridging adult contemporary pop, jazz, and theatrical ballads, it included covers of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" and the Kinks' "I Go to Sleep." The next year's Happy This Way followed in similar fashion and offered collaborations with Thompson (the tribute "Nicholas Drake"), Ian Shaw (the slinky jazz tune "Cool Life"), and Cassandra Wilson and Quantic ("Enough"). Owen continued her eclectic stylistic mix on 2008's Mopping Up Karma before releasing The Beautiful Damage Collection in 2010. A final album for Courgette, 2012's Some Kind of Comfort, featured songs from the darkly comic stage production Ruby Wax, Losing It. Another duet with Fordham, a cover of "White Christmas," appeared in 2013, and Owen and her husband launched another label, Twanky Records, with 2014's Ebb & Flow, Owen's tenth studio LP. Rooted in '70s singer/songwriter tradition, it included a cover of James Taylor's "Hey Mister That's Me up on the Jukebox." In 2015, Owen and Shearer collaborated on the holiday EP Christmas Without Tears, which included appearances from fellow comedic actors Fred Willard and Catherine O'Hara. A year later, Owen delivered the diverse, piano-forward Somebody's Child. The covers album redisCOVERed followed on Twanky in 2018 with tributes to artists ranging from the Beatles and Joni Mitchell to Wild Cherry and Drake. Her first dedicated jazz album, Come On & Get It, followed in 2022. Recorded in New Orleans with musicians including Nicholas Payton, drummer Jason Marsalis, and saxophonist Donald Harrison, among many others, it was influenced by the bluesier side of mid-century jazz inspirations, such as Dinah Washington, Pearl Bailey, and Peggy Lee. To support the album, Owen played shows with her band the Gentlemen Callers, including sold-out dates in Europe, a residency at the McKittrick Hotel in New York, and a slot at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
