Jonny Pierce

Jonny Pierce, born on October 3, 1981, in New York, United States of America, began his musical journey while working the graveyard shift at an upstate hotel, recording tracks on his synthesizer in his downtime. His journey took an unexpected turn when he crossed paths with a band manager on a chatroom who heard his music and invited him to New York. Forming indie pop band The Drums with childhood friend Jacob Graham (guitar/keyboards) as well as Adam Kessler (bass) and Connor Hardwick (drums/guitar), the group gained significant attention following the release of their debut EP, Summertime! in 2009 and self-titled album in 2010. The EP's success earned them accolades and opportunities to support major acts like Bombay Bicycle Club and Florence and the Machine, attracting even further momentum with second album, Portamento in 2011. It was about this time that Pierce ventured into songwriting, co-authoring "In the Middle (I Met You There)" with Brooklyn artist Matthew Dear for his EP Headcage and contributing to Mark Ronson's album Record Collection. Over the years, The Drums experienced multiple line-up changes, and by 2017, it had essentially become Jonny Pierce's solo project. With songwriting that often delved into themes of love, longing, and introspection, Pierce’s music resonated with a wide audience, seeing 2017 album Abysmal Thoughts hitting number 5 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Charts. Riding on the wave of this success, Pierce released The Drums next album Brutalism, in 2019 followed by Mommy Don’t Spank Me in 2021, solidifying his place in the indie pop scene as a solo artist. Pierce made a return in April 2023 with The Drums’ first single in several years, "I Want It All," leading up to the release of sixth album titled Jonny, which landed on October 13, 2023.
