IAN SWEET
The nervy indie pop of Ian Sweet, while musically complex, is undeniably hooky. Led by Jilian Medford, the project released its first album, Shapeshifter, in 2016. While it relied heavily on layers of guitar distortion, his third album Show Me How You Disappear (2021) ventured into shimmery electronic components like synths and drum loops without abandoning its noisy core. Ian Sweet further explored elements like synths and wide-ranging guitar textures on 2023's SUCKER.
Begun as the solo vehicle for singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jilian Medford while she studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ian Sweet was originally called Ian, an old high school nickname bestowed upon her by her skater friends. A last-minute cancellation by a touring drummer in 2014 led her to work with Tim Cheney, with whom she quickly forged a creative connection and burgeoning friendship. By the time she recruited bassist Damien Scalise, the project had evolved from a solo endeavor to a trio, and they adopted the name Ian Sweet. Medford's songs confronted themes of anxiety and panic with bright-toned guitar pop and references to Nickelodeon's Slime Time Live, Michael Jordan, and skateboarding.
After settling in Brooklyn, the group signed with Hardly Art and released their self-titled debut EP in mid-2016. It was followed a few months later by Shapeshifter, their noisier full-length debut. Medford then relocated back to her hometown of Los Angeles and recruited bassist Simon Hanes and drummer Max Almario for the project's sophomore album, 2018's Crush Crusher. It was produced and mixed by Gabe Wax (Beirut, Palehound).
Ian Sweet moved to Polyvinyl for their third album, which wrangled with the aftermath of trauma. Recorded with producers including Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Hand Habits) and Andy Seltzer (Maggie Rogers, Chelsea Cutler) after Medford entered treatment for increasingly severe panic attacks, the synth-infused Show Me How You Disappear saw release in early 2021. A few months later, Coldplay themselves shared her cover of their song "Yellow" with their followers on social media.
Featuring three original songs and a remix, a stopgap EP, STAR STUFF, appeared in mid-2022, shortly before Medford began work on her next album at an artist residency in the Catskills that included round-the-clock studio access. It gave her the opportunity to push herself out of her comfort zone and try new things, including improvising songs on the spot. Produced with Alex Craig (Big Troubles) and Isaac Eiger (Strange Ranger), the resulting album, SUCKER, arrived on Polyvinyl in November 2023. It featured an even heavier reliance on shimmery synths as well as acoustic and oversaturated guitar textures.
