Dimitri Ashkenazy
Dimitri Ashkenazy is an Icelandic clarinetist. The son of pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, he was born in New York City and was raised in Iceland, but moved with his family to Meggen, near Lucerne, Switzerland, in 1978. He received piano lessons starting at age six, and took up the clarinet at ten. After winning competitions in the late 1980s, Ashkenazy attended the Conservatory of Lucerne to study with Giambattista Sisini, and earned his diploma with distinction in 1993. He has been an internationally acclaimed artist, performing in the United States, England, France, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Russia, and Australia, and he has played with Barbara Bonney, Peter Maxwell Davies, Krzystof Penderecki, and Edita Gruberová, as well as with his father conducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Ashkenazy has recorded for Paladino Music, ABC Classics, Orlando, Dux Records, and Pan.
