David Lowe
b. c. 1958, England. Largely a self-taught composer, Lowe had success with pop material in 1998, with ‘Would You...?’, which was recorded by Touch And Go (a collaboration between Lowe, Charlie Gillett, Gordon Nelki, Vanessa Lancaster and James Lynch). The single became in a hit in Europe and reached number 3 in the UK charts. The album I Find You Very Attractive followed in 2000 and was released on V2 Records.
Lowe’s reputation in the late 90s rested primarily upon the large volume of work he contributed to television. In particular, he composed themes for numerous documentaries, news and current affairs programmes, including, but by no means limited to, BBC News, Grand Designs and 5th Gear, as well as themes for shows, such as the BBC’s 2006 coverage of the Winter Olympics. In addition to television, Lowe has also composed theme music for major events, such as 2005’s Ivor Novello Awards and 2006’s BAFTA Film and Television Awards.
Following the 1997 release of his solo debut Dreamcatcher, Lowe played live at festivals held under the banner of the World Of Music And Dance. In 2005 he was invited by the organizers of WOMAD to perform at their Reading, Berkshire, event a new work they had commissioned. This music was later expanded and recorded as What... Is In Between?, with vocal lines by poet and novelist Benjamin Zephaniah and artist and composer Mieko Shimizu, and instrumental solos by trumpeter Guy Barker and trombonist Annie Whitehead.
Lowe, who has worked as a BBC sound engineer, is also heard outside the UK with material he has composed for television programmes emanating from Dubai, India and Norway. Increasingly recognized as a major contributor to world music’s broad canvas, Lowe’s reputation continues to spread.
