Conexión Divina

L.A. trio Conexión Divina ("Divine Connection") update Mexican sierreño music with their melancholy, pop-infused take and are notable as one of the few all-female groups in the traditionally male-dominated genre. Part of a wave of young artists bringing traditional Mexican music styles to major popularity in the 21st century U.S. by combining them with pop elements, the band initially comprised Angelena Liz Trujillo (vocals, guitar), Arizona native Ashlee Valenzuela (12-string guitar), and Texan Sandra Calixto (acoustic bass). The band, Calixto's brainchild, formed on social media in 2021, initially trading covers and collaborating long-distance, inspired by the likes of Vicente Fernández, Selena, Jenni Rivera, Gerardo Ortíz, and Ivan Cornejo. Blowing up online, they decided they had something and assembled in L.A. to try and make it. In September 2022, Conexión Divina announced their signing with Sony Music Latin and released their debut single, "Odio" ("Hatred"), a tale of unrequited love. It, and further singles including "La Receta" and "Paso a Pasito," appeared on their debut album, Tres Mundos ("Three Worlds"), released the following April to critical acclaim. The album featured cameos from contemporaries los Aptos and Gabito Ballesteros. Just a few days after its release, the band performed at the massive Coachella festival. Later that year, they were nominated for best new act at the Latin Grammys and performed at the ceremony in Seville, Spain. In late 2023, Valenzuela left the band and was replaced by Austinite Daniela Santiago.
