Clan of Xymox

A major influence on the darkwave scene, Clan of Xymox are known for their driving, often danceable form of introspective goth rock. The Dutch group became a staple of the 4AD label beginning with the 1985 full-length Clan of Xymox. With 1989's Twist of Shadows, they reclaimed their original moniker, Xymox, and developed a more synth-based sound, even venturing into techno and house with releases like 1992's Metamorphosis. As industrial rock became popular, the band moved to Berlin, changed their name back to Clan of Xymox, and incorporated deeper vocals and heavier guitars into their music, starting with 1997's Hidden Faces. Steadily releasing music on labels like Metropolis and Trisol, they delved into harder electronics on 2011's Darkest Hour, and paid tribute to their inspirations with 2012's Kindred Spirits. They reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic with 2021's Limbo, and released the 2022 single "Save Our Souls" in support of Ukraine. Clan of Xymox were formed in Nijmegen, Netherlands in 1983 by Ronny Moorings (vocals, guitar) and Anka Wolbert (bass, vocals), who met two years earlier. Moorings and Wolbert moved to Amsterdam, releasing the LP Subsequent Pleasures as Xymox in 1984. (The mini-album was limited to 500 copies.) Xymox then became the opening act for Dead Can Dance in England -- their presence on the tour attracted the interest of 4AD Records, and the label eventually signed them. A year later, Xymox lengthened their name to Clan of Xymox and recorded a self-titled album in 1985, followed by Medusa the next year. In 1987, the group shortened its appellation to Xymox once again, contributing another version of "Muscoviet Mosquito," originally on Subsequent Pleasures, to the 4AD compilation Lonely Is an Eyesore. After the release of the single "Blind Hearts," Xymox left 4AD and joined PolyGram/Wing. In 1989, Xymox released Twist of Shadows, their most commercially successful LP, selling 300,000 copies. The group relocated to England during the height of the rave explosion, and the infectious and uncharacteristically upbeat "Phoenix of My Heart," sounding closer to the Madchester scene than anything else Xymox ever did, landed on the modern rock charts in 1991. The full-length Phoenix continued exploring this sort of alternative dance sound. Wolbert departed from the band that year, replaced by bassist Mojca Zugna. In 1992, Xymox left PolyGram/Wing for ZOK Records. They recorded two albums for ZOK -- 1992's Metamorphosis and 1993's trance-leaning Headclouds -- before Moorings moved back to the Netherlands and went on hiatus for three years. Moorings became inspired to return to music when industrial was at its commercial peak. He moved to Berlin and switched the band's name back to Clan of Xymox. Tess Records released Hidden Faces in 1997. Creatures, their first album released by Metropolis Records in the United States and Pandaimonium in Europe, appeared in 1999. This was followed by the two-CD Live in 2000, and archival release The John Peel Sessions the following year. The 2001 album, Notes from the Underground, was reinterpreted on the double-remix CD Remixes from the Underground, which landed in 2002. 2003's Farewell was a themed album with bittersweet goodbyes to lovers and friends as the main topics. The 2004 collection The Best of Clan of Xymox found latter-day highlights next to re-recordings of the band's early material. Two years later, the album Breaking Point was issued, including the single "Weak in My Knees." Their first release for Trisol in Europe, 2009's In Love We Trust, was a return to the layered sound of their 4AD years. Live at Castle Party, the group's second concert release, appeared in 2011, as well as Darkest Hour, one of the band's most industrial efforts. 2012's Kindred Spirits consisted of cover versions of songs by the Cure, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, and others. Matters of Mind, Body and Soul appeared in 2014, while Dark Entries reissued Subsequent Pleasures on vinyl. Days of Black was released in 2020, and several EPs of remixes and B-sides accompanied 2020's Spider on the Wall, featuring the driving post-punk dance single "She." Limbo, with lyrics addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, appeared in 2021, and The John Peel Sessions was given its first vinyl release, again by Dark Entries. In 2022, Clan of Xymox released the song "Save Our Souls" about the Russian war on Ukraine, with proceeds donated to organizations against human and animal suffering.
