Anna Serova
Violist Anna Serova often plays contemporary works created for her, including some that draw on the tango. She is also a significant educator.
Serova was born in 1973 in Arkhangelsk, Russia, then in the Soviet Union. She began violin studies at six, but a teacher suggested that her violin sound was suited to the viola, and at 15, she switched permanently to that instrument. Serova studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Vladimir Stopicev. She moved to Italy but retained ties to her homeland and served for a time as Attaché for Cultural and Trade Relations for the city of Krasnoyarsk, promoting Russian-Italian ties. At the Stauffer Academy of Cremona, she studied with Bruno Giuranna, and she went on to the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, studying with violist and violinist Yuri Bashmet. Serova made her recording debut in 2015 on the Naxos label with the Croatian Radio & Television Symphony Orchestra, performing on the album Boris Pigovat: Holocaust Requiem; Poem of Dawn.
Serova has been active as a viola soloist, performing mostly in Italy and Eastern Europe. She has appeared, among many other ensembles, with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, the Orchestra di Padova e del Vento, and the Belgrade Philharmonic. An enthusiastic chamber musician, she has collaborated with the likes of violinists Salvatore Accardo and Ivry Gitlis and the late cellist Rocco Filippini. A notable feature of Serova's career is her engagement with contemporary music; she has had works written for her by Azio Corghi, Boris Pigovat, and Roberto Molinelli, among others. Her collaboration with Molinelli is ongoing and has involved several works, including an opera, that use tango rhythms. Serova has recorded several albums for Naxos, including a 2023 release featuring a viola arrangement of William Walton's Cello Concerto with the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento. She is on the faculty at Italy's E.R. Duni Conservatory in Matera and Fondazione Accademia Perosi in Biella, and she is in demand for master classes as both a violist and a chamber musician.
