Nathaniel Rateliff hat den Nachtschweiß. Den Nachtschweiß und den Soul. Mit seiner neuen Band The Night Sweats entfernt sich der 36-jährige Sänger weit vom Folk der Vorgänger-Alben. Von der Tradition angesteckt trägt sein erster Longplayer auf Stax Records die Seele von Otis Redding und Sam & Dave in sich.
Seine neue Band bietet ihm ein mit verzerrten Gitarren, Hammond-Orgel und schweren Bläsern ausgefülltes und im Groove verankertes Umfeld. Den Reiz der Platte macht jedoch nicht der authentische Sound der späten Sechziger aus, sondern die in diesem Umfeld so ungewohnt näselnde, quengelnde Folk-Stimme des Sängers, die ihre Wurzeln nie aufgibt.
Rateliff kehrt sein Inneres nach außen. "Diese Songs handeln von den Kämpfen meines Lebens – vom zu viel Trinken, dieser Art von Mist." Dementsprechend schreit im überschäumenden Blue Eyed Soul-Refrain von "S.O.B.", in dem er an der Intensität eines Van Morrison kratzt, ein "Son of a bitch, give me a drink" aus ihm heraus. Den Rest bestimmen Händeklatschen, Schnipsen und Summen. "I'm gonna writhe and shake my body / I'll start pulling out my hair/ I'm going to cover myself with the ashes of you and nobody's gonna give a damn."
Das von der Sonne geküsste "I Need Never Get Old" definiert den Sound der weiteren Stücke und dient mit seinem leichten Rock-Einfluss, dem stampfenden Beat und den aufwirbelnden Bläsern als rundum gelungener Opener. Einzig "Shake" richtet sich mit seinem Voodoo-Groove deutlich gegen die Grundstimmung der Platte aus und lässt noch einmal Salma Hayek auf den Tischen im Titty Twister tanzen.
Rateliffs Einflüsse lassen sich deutlich aus den Songs heraus lesen. "Howling At Nothing" zitiert Sam Cooke, der frische Country-Soul in "Wasting Time" erinnert nochmals an Van Morrison in seiner "Into The Music"-Phase. In "Trying So Hard Not To Know" finden sich Sänger und Night Sweats im rauen Deep Soul wieder. "Who gives a damn and very few can."
Rateliff stellt sich auf "Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats" der neuen Herausforderung kraftvoll und ohne Berührungsängste. Produzent Richard Swift (The Shins, Foxygen) setzt ihn organisch in Szene. Unter der Oberfläche lebt die Folk-Tradition weiter. Mit dem finalen "Mellow Out" endet das Album mit der Befreiung aus dem eigenen Sumpf, zeigt einen aufmunternden Weg aus dem Tal der Frustration. Lebe dein Leben, blicke niemals zurück.

Den Reiz der Platte macht jedoch nicht der authentische Sound der späten Sechziger aus, sondern die in diesem Umfeld so ungewohnt näselnde, quengelnde Folk-Stimme des Sängers, die ihre Wurzeln nie aufgibt.
Rateliff kehrt sein Inneres nach außen. "Diese Songs handeln von den Kämpfen meines Lebens – vom zu viel Trinken, dieser Art von Mist." Dementsprechend schreit im überschäumenden Blue Eyed Soul-Refrain von "S.O.B.", in dem er an der Intensität eines Van Morrison kratzt, ein "Son of a bitch, give me a drink" aus ihm heraus. Den Rest bestimmen Händeklatschen, Schnipsen und Summen. "I'm gonna writhe and shake my body / I'll start pulling out my hair/ I'm going to cover myself with the ashes of you and nobody's gonna give a damn."
Das von der Sonne geküsste "I Need Never Get Old" definiert den Sound der weiteren Stücke und dient mit seinem leichten Rock-Einfluss, dem stampfenden Beat und den aufwirbelnden Bläsern als rundum gelungener Opener. Einzig "Shake" richtet sich mit seinem Voodoo-Groove deutlich gegen die Grundstimmung der Platte aus und lässt noch einmal Salma Hayek auf den Tischen im Titty Twister tanzen.
Rateliffs Einflüsse lassen sich deutlich aus den Songs heraus lesen. "Howling At Nothing" zitiert Sam Cooke, der frische Country-Soul in "Wasting Time" erinnert nochmals an Van Morrison in seiner "Into The Music"-Phase. In "Trying So Hard Not To Know" finden sich Sänger und Night Sweats im rauen Deep Soul wieder. "Who gives a damn and very few can."
Rateliff stellt sich auf "Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats" der neuen Herausforderung kraftvoll und ohne Berührungsängste. Produzent Richard Swift (The Shins, Foxygen) setzt ihn organisch in Szene. Unter der Oberfläche lebt die Folk-Tradition weiter. Mit dem finalen "Mellow Out" endet das Album mit der Befreiung aus dem eigenen Sumpf, zeigt einen aufmunternden Weg aus dem Tal der Frustration. Lebe dein Leben, blicke niemals zurück.
