Auf ihrem vierten Album October Rust (1996) führen Type O Negative die Tendenz des Vorgängers Bloody Kisses (1993) fort, wo die langen, hypnotischen Goth-Metal-Songs der Band mit stärkeren Synthesizer-Stimmungen und überraschenden Melodien gewürzt wurden. Tatsächlich kündigte Frontmann Peter Steele schon im Vorfeld an, dass die Platte melodischer ausfallen würde - und so stürzt sich die Gruppe auf eine Art "Pop-Goth", der aber mit sarkastischen Texten und viel düsterer Psychedelik gemischt ist. Auch ein Cover ist wieder dabei: Die Band knöpft sich "Cinnamon Girl" von Neil Young vor. Als Singles wurden außerdem "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", "Love You to Death" und "In Praise of Bacchus" ausgekoppelt.
