Barely a year after the release of Origin, which inaugurated his collaboration with the label Mack Avenue Records in the form of a true gem of sophistication and lightness combined, young Indonesian pianist Joey Alexander is back with a new album that’s just as seductive in its expression and mastery of the art form. Presenting himself this time around at the head of a trio composed of bassist Kriss Funn and drummer John Davies, remarkable for their cohesion and fluidity, Alexander lives up to his reputation as a virtuoso, as always impressively demonstrating his many talents as a pianist.
Yet, as was foreshadowed by his previous album, he also establishes his undeniable skills as an arranger, by creating a project that is truly esthetic. Adding to his palette Fender Rhodes and Mellotron to create subtle and refined sonoric edifices in which Theo Croker comes in on four tracks to weave in the masterfully controlled lyricism of his trumpet, just as intense as it is restrained, Joey Alexander creates a jubilant, deceptively superficial record, with the precision and sophistication of his musical language concealed behind an appearance of ease and naturalness, which sees him exhibit the professionalism of the greatest performers. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
