PRJCT Amsterdam

The Baroque ensemble PRJCT Amsterdam is built around the talents of countertenor Maarten Engeltjes. The group offers imaginative thematic programs, several of which have served as the basis for recording projects, and it has attracted top collaborators despite its relative youth. PRJCT Amsterdam was founded in 2017. As of the mid-2020s, the group had 15 members, all young Baroque musicians who had recently graduated from early music programs. All play historical instruments, either restored originals or modern copies. Engeltjes serves as artistic director and often seeks to foster collaborations with top international musicians, who may appear as a soloist or concertmaster. The group is known for novel programming on Baroque-oriented themes; the first such program was "Tears of a Mother," which included Pergolesi's Stabat Mater; the program also included contributions by writer P.F. Thomése. In 2019, PRJCT Amsterdam and Engeltjes made their recording debut on the Sony Classical label with the album Bach: Forgotten Arias; the group has also performed that program live. The PRJCT Amsterdam program "If Music Be the Food of Love" featured star countertenor Andreas Scholl and was performed at such leading Dutch and Belgian venues as De Doelen, TivoliVredenburg, AMUZ Antwerp, and the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ Amsterdam. Other PRJCT Amsterdam programs include "Virtuoso!," featuring cantatas by Vivaldi, Monteverdi, and Francesco Cavalli; "Nicht mehr hier," with music by Bach and Buxtehude; and "Gloria!: Vivaldi, Händel, Bach." "Nicht mehr hier" was developed into the group's sophomore release, released in 2020 under the title Nicht mehr hier: Music by JS Bach, D Buxtehude, and JC Bach. PRJCT Amsterdam moved to the PentaTone label in 2024 for a recording of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus, with Engeltjes as soloist. That year also saw the development of a new PRJCT Amsterdam program, "Mozart!," featuring tenor Rolando Villazón.
