Maarten Engeltjes

Countertenor Maarten Engeltjes is in demand in both opera and choral music. He has recorded for the major Sony Classical and PentaTone Classics labels. Engeltjes was born in 1984 in Zwolle or Elburg in the northeastern Netherlands (sources differ, but the two towns are very close to each other). At age four, he joined the Elburg City Boys' Choir. Engeltjes had some success as a boy soprano, performing in 1995 under conductor David Willcocks in a Haarlem, Netherlands, boys' choir festival in Handel's Coronation Anthems. After his voice broke, he decided to continue as a countertenor, studying with tenor and educator Paul Hameleers. He made his debut as a countertenor at 16 in a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244. Countertenor Michael Chance was a major influence on Engeltjes, choosing him for a master class that was broadcast on Dutch television and singing several duets with him. Engeltjes attended the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, graduating in 2007 after studies with Maria Acda, Manon Heijne, and Andreas Scholl, among others. In 2011, he made his recording debut with the early music ensemble La Venexiana on a recording of Francesco Cavalli's opera Artemisia. Engeltjes has performed widely in both oratorio (as an alto) and in opera, as well as in cantatas and other sacred works. He has performed at such major international venues as the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Barbican in London, Lincoln Center in New York, and Izumi Hall in Tokyo, as well as most major Dutch venues. Engeltjes focuses on Baroque music but performs music from other periods; Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro is in his operatic repertory, and in 2020, he toured with pianist Jan-Paul Grijpink, performing Schubert's song cycle Die Winterreise, D. 911. In the 2010s, he appeared on various recordings of music by Bach and Buxtehude, and in 2012, he made his debut as a featured artist on the Quintone label with Concerto d'Amsterdam in the 1725 version of Bach's Johannes Passion, BWV 245. Engeltjes was featured in 2019 and 2020 on a pair of Bach albums on Sony Classical, Bach: Forgotten Arias and Nicht mehr hier. He returned in 2024 with a recording of Pergolesi's Stabat mater on PentaTone and on Harmonia Mundi with the first volume in a series titled "J.S. Bach: A Life in Music," featuring the ensemble Les Arts Florissants and conductor Paul Agnew.
