Les puristes et inconditionnels de ce géant du blues détestent cet album. Chester Burnett, « le loup hurlant », y semble moins à son aise que lors de ses séances pour le label Chess dans les décennies 1950 et 1960.
En fait, entouré de la crème des petits maîtres britanniques de l’époque qui lui doivent tant, sa voix y est moins gutturale, moins puissante que dans ses précédents enregistrements légendaires ; sans doute pour ne pas effrayer les petits blancs !
Il y révisite son propre répertoire (« Sittin’ on Top of the World »), et celui de son producteur chez Chess, Willie Dixon (« I Ain’t Superstitious »), [Burnett/Dixon, la paire de compositeurs la plus prisée de la jeune génération de musiciens de Blues européens], et il apprend même à la section rythmique des Rolling Stones (Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, Ian Stewart) les accords corrects de « Red Rooster » avec lequel les Stones avaient obtenu un n°1 sept ans plus tôt !
Se sont donnés rendez-vous pour l’occasion Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Wyman, Watts, Klaus Voormann, et Howlin’ Wolf avait amené pour l’occasion son fidèle guitariste Hubert Sumlin.
