Un rocking chair et une guitare acoustique... Sous cette pochette anachronique de Don Bronstein, figure vieillote et déformée du blues, se cache l'un des plus grands monuments originaux du genre, embouché par le hurleur et grommelant Howlin' Wolf.
À l'intérieur de ce Rocking Chair Album se terrent pas moins de cinq classiques absolus, mettant en scène le géant baryton entouré de la crème des studios Chess à Chicago où furent enregistrés ces douze titres entre 1959 et 1962. Au menu donc, les immortels « The Red Rooster », « Wang Dang Doodle », « Spoonful », « Going Down Slow » et « Back Door Man », dans leur prime et essentielle mise au monde. La carte ne s'arrête pas là et peuvent s'y ajouter des perles cachées comme « Shake for Me », « Who's Been Talking » ou « Howlin' for My Baby » afin de bien comprendre où se situe l'affaire dans une zone stratosphérique.
Douze blues sauvages sortis de terre par le plus vigoureux planteur de chorus, arrosés par de fines gâchettes nommées Hubert Sumlin, Freddy Robinson, Jimmy Rogers, Otis « Big Smokey » Smothers (belle brochette de guitaristes), Henry Gray, Johnny Jones, Lafayette Leake, Otis Spann (piano), Willie Dixon (contrebasse), Buddy Guy (basse), Fred Below et Junior Blackman (batterie) et Ralph Bass à la production. Difficile de faire mieux avec les moyens de l'époque, et pour le moins historique.
