Unkle Bob

Known for their heartfelt songwriting and graceful folk-pop style, Unkle Bob rose out of Glasgow's university scene in the mid-2000s. Produced by James member Saul Davies, their 2006 debut, Sugar & Spite, found an audience in the U.S. where several of its songs were used in popular television programs like Grey's Anatomy and CSI Miami. The group disbanded after 2010's Shockwaves, though frontman Rick Webster revived the Unkle Bob name for a handful of releases including 2014's Embers and the 2017's EP The Highest Mountains. In 2023, all five founding members reunited to record Unkle Bob's lush fourth album, Invisible. Members Rick Webster (vocals, guitar), Stuart Cartwright (guitar), Geoff Widdowson (keyboards), Chloe Peacock (bass), and Ron Yeadon (drums) formed in 2004 while attending Glasgow University. They found an early ally in James guitarist Saul Davies who signed the fledgling band to his Friendly Sounds label and co-produced their debut album. Released in 2006, Sugar & Spite fused Unkle Bob's melodic indie folk songs with a more robust rock-oriented production to great effect. It received solid reviews in the U.K. and several songs found key placements in American TV shows which helped grow their audience in the U.S. Tours with the Feeling, Proclaimers, and James followed over the next several years and in 2010, Unkle Bob returned with their sophomore set, Shockwaves. The original lineup lasted one more year before disbanding in 2011. As chief songwriter and singer, Webster decided to continue using the Unkle Bob name and in 2014 released Embers with a newly assembled lineup. A pair of mini albums, The Deepest Sea (2016) and The Highest Mountains (2017), followed, as did a 2019 collaboration with the Little Birds called When You Were Awake. Following another hiatus, Webster reunited with his former bandmates to begin recording new music together. With all five founding members involved, Unkle Bob recorded the expansive and heartfelt comeback album Invisible, which saw release in 2023.
