The Embassy

Swedish duo the Embassy re-assemble several different breeds of pop with their own brand of light, upbeat, and danceable sounds, using New Order-inspired synth pop as a starting point and blending in elements of space age bachelor pad, electronic dance, disco, and even hints of pub rock. The Embassy's production pastiche is mirrored by their mischievous attitude, and the group has stayed active in the form of antic-laden live shows and a stream of studio output that stretches from their 2002 debut full-length Futile Crimes to their fifth studio album, E-Numbers, which was released more than 20 years later in 2023. The Embassy formed in Gothenburg in 1999 around the talents of guitarist/vocalist Fredrik Lindson and keyboardist/programmer Torbjörn Håkansson. Their signature blend of breezy electronic pop and New Order-inspired dance-rock first appeared in the form of several singles, and then on their 2022 debut album Futile Crimes. The Embassy's iconoclastic nature came into view during this early phase, with the band often performing their shows using fake instruments made of cardboard while playing backing tracks. They released a series of singles and EPs between 2003 and 2005, and their 2005 sophomore full-length, Tacking, further exemplified the band's self-described style of "Underclass Disco." The Embassy's influence started to show up in upcoming Swedish indie groups, while they themselves stopped releasing new music for a few years due to a lack of faith in the traditional album format. This brief hiatus ended with 2013's club-tinged album Sweet Sensation. In 2018, their fourth album White Lake arrived, comprising eight songs all recorded on Skype. Though the band remained active with sporadic singles and EP releases, it wouldn't be until 2023 that they returned with their fifth album, E-Numbers.
