Psyk
Spanish producer Psyk, aka Manuel Anós, has consistently churned out top-quality, moody, functional techno on labels like Figure, Semantica and his own Non Series.
Born and brought up in Madrid, Anós fell in love with electronic music as a teen. Too young to attend clubs, he and his friends would hold illegal raves outside the city. Later he became focused on techno; inspired by the minimalist, hypnotic music of Steve Rachmad, Plastikman, and Basic Channel, he set out to create a compelling sound from a bare minimum of elements. Anós launched the Psyk project in 2009 with the digital EPs "Phant" and "Quimic," on Konstructure and Sleaze, respectively. His first 12" "Cubes," on Enemy, caught the attention of Len Faki's Figure, which put out the single "Throes" in 2010. This release showcased a tough, functional, dancefloor-oriented form of techno with atmospheric sound design. 2012 was a big year for Psyk with releases on Drumcode, Figure, his own Non Series (which he had launched the previous year), and Luke Slater's Mote-Evolver. That label put out Psyk's debut full-length album, Time Foundation, in 2014; a mature, cohesive effort, it added new depths to his sound, smoothing out the very hardest edges without losing its essential dancefloor focus. Further singles and albums came out in the following years on CLR, Fuse, Semantica, and Berlin mainstay Tresor, which in 2019 released the second Psyk album, A Moment Before; even more streamlined, stripped-back, and focused than ever before, it displayed a further evolution in his sound.
